Cowboys Open Series With 13-5 Win Over Texas Tech
May 12, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
LUBBOCK, Texas  Rebel Ridling had five RBIs, and Oklahoma State scored seven runs in the first two innings as the 15th-ranked Cowboys opened their series against Texas Tech with a 13-5 win Friday night at Dan Law Field.
With the win, OSU improved to 35-13 overall and 14-8 in Big 12 Conference play, while Texas Tech dropped to 26-22 and 7-14 in the league.
Ridling finished the contest 3-for-5 with five RBIs, while Cowboy second baseman Tyler Mach was also 3-for-5 and drove in a run.
Also highlighting the night for the Cowboys was Ty Wright, who singled in the top of the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to 25 games and tie Monty Fariss (1988) for the second longest streak in OSU history.
Corey Brown also became the first Cowboy to walk five times in a game since Josh Holliday set a school record with six walks against Oral Roberts on May 29, 1999.
Ridling got things going for OSU in the top of the first. With two on and two out, the junior first baseman blasted a three-run home run to center field to give the Cowboys a 3-0 advantage. It was Ridling's 11th homer of the season and eighth in Big 12 play.
The Cowboys would not have the lead long, however, as Texas Tech tied the score in the bottom of the first off OSU starter Jeff Breedlove. Chris Richburg delivered the Red Raiders' first two runs with a single, and after stealing second, he would score on a single by James Leverton to make the score 3-3.
But OSU's second at bat would be even better than its first as the Cowboys rallied for four runs to regain the lead for good.
Steve Ptak jump started the rally with a triple off the wall in right field. After Ryan Pittman was hit by a pitch, a wild pitch scored Ptak with the go-ahead run. An RBI single by Keanon Simon made the score 5-3, and the Cowboys later added two runs on another two-out hit by Ridling.
Ridling's single scored Simon and gave him his fourth RBI of the contest. Brown also scored on the play on an error by Tech center fielder Taylor Ashby to give OSU a four-run lead.
OSU led 8-3 when the Cowboys got into trouble in the bottom of the sixth as Tech singled and walked to open the frame.
Martin Beno was called on out of the Cowboy bullpen to squash the rally, and that's exactly what the OSU right hander did. Beno got Doug Thennis to ground into a double play on a bunt attempt, and Matt Smith to pop up to end the inning and the Tech threat.
Beno worked three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while tying a career high with three strikeouts.
Robbie Weinhardt earned the win on the mound, coming on in relief of Breedlove and tossing 1.2 scoreless innings to improve to 3-1.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 2 p.m., with Sunday's finale scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
