Cowboys Suffer Second Setback Against Nebraska
April 07, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
LINCOLN, Neb. — Oklahoma State saw its conference series winning streak come to an end Saturday at Hawks Field as Nebraska handed the Cowboys a 9-2 loss to clinch a series win for the Huskers.
The loss ended 11th-ranked OSU's Big 12 Conference series winning streak at eight, and the Cowboys dropped to 22-8 overall and 5-3 in league play.
Nebraska (19-11, 5-6) jumped out to an early lead in its first at bat, rallying for four runs with two outs off OSU starter Robbie Weinhardt, who lasted just 2/3 of an inning in the first start of his Cowboy career.
Andrew Brown drove in the Huskers' first run with a double, and an RBI single by Jake Opitz made the score 2-0. A two-RBI double by Andy Gerch gave NU a four-run lead and drove Weinhardt from the game.
OSU got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Matt Mangini and Rebel Ridling collected back-to-back singles to lead off the frame and put Cowboys at first and third. Mangini would score on a double play to make the score 4-1.
The Huskers erupted for four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, getting RBI singles from Brown and Mitch Abeita and a two-RBI base hit by Jeff Tezak.
The score remained 8-1 until the sixth. OSU loaded the bases with one out, and Corey Brown scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Ty Wright.
That would be the only run the Cowboys could manage the rest of the way, however, as they left six runners stranded on the bases over the final three innings.
Right hander Johnny Dorn earned the win for the Huskers, striking out eight in six innings of work to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Weinhardt suffered the loss for the Cowboys, dropping him to 2-1.
Tyler Mach, the Big 12's leading hitter, had three of OSU's seven hits on Saturday. The Cowboys' senior second baseman was 3-for-4 in the contest.
OSU and Nebraska will close out the series Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
