Five-Run Fifth Inning Dooms Cowboys In Loss To Texas
April 28, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Back-to-back home runs in the top of the fifth inning lifted fourth-ranked Texas to a 7-2 win over 12th-ranked Oklahoma State in front of a sellout crowd of 3,826 fans Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Texas loaded the bases off OSU starter Oliver Odle in the pivotal inning, and Russell Moldenhauer blasted a grand slam off Cowboy reliever Tyler Lyons to snap a 2-2 tie. Nick Peoples followed with a solo home run to propel Texas to the series win.
The loss dropped OSU to third in the Big 12 Conference race behind Texas and Missouri. The Cowboys, who lost just their second conference series in their last 12 tries, are now 31-12 overall and 10-7 in league play. The Longhorns improved to 36-12 and 16-4 in the conference. UT has won each of its seven Big 12 series this season.
The Cowboys got on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs off Adrian Alaniz in the bottom of the first inning. Ty Wright singled, which extended his hitting streak to 20 games, and Corey Brown followed with a two-run home run to right field. The homer was Brown's team leading 17th of the season.
UT tied the score with a two-run homer of their own in the fourth, as Preston Clark delivered a shot over the wall in right-center field to make the score 2-2.
OSU's best chance for a big rally came in the seventh. Donnie Webb doubled to lead off the frame, and a single by Keanon Simon and a walk to Wright loaded the bases with one out. But Joseph Krebs came out of the Texas bullpen and struck out Brown and Tyler Mach to end the rally.
Saturday's 3,826 fans was the first sellout at Reynolds Stadium since May 25, 1997, when the Cowboys hosted UCLA in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Wright was 1-for-3 in the loss, and the senior left fielder now has 278 hits in his career, which is tied for fourth place on OSU's all-time chart.
Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start as OSU will look to extend its 26-year streak of never having lost more than two consecutive games at Reynolds Stadium.
