Three Cowgirls Named Arthur Ashe Scholars

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State women's track and field athletes Brittany Mason, Kalea Tam and Deleanor Kirkpatrick were named as 2007 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars it was announced by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.
Mason was named to the first team after compiling a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall semester. The native of
Tam, a biochemistry and molecular biology major, was selected to the second team as she posted a 3.59 GPA last semester. Tam ranks second on the team in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.48.
Kirkpatrick, who earned the honor for the second consecutive year, was named to the third team after compiling a 3.25 GPA. The nutrition major leads the squad with the top mark in the hammer throw and ranks No. 10 in the conference.
The magazine established the award, which was inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, to honor undergraduate students of color who have achieved both athletically and academically as well as in the community.
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses or in their community.
OSU's 17 Arthur Ashe recipients this year are the seventh-highest total nationally and were tops among Big 12 schools.
