Ridling's Big Day Lifts Cowboys To Doubleheader Sweep
April 19, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Rebel Ridling had nine RBIs to lead Oklahoma State to a doubleheader sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The 15th-ranked Cowboys opened with a 7-2 win before completing the sweep with a 12-3 triumph in the nightcap. With the wins, OSU improved to 29-9 on the season.
In the opener, the OSU pitching trio of Joe Kent, Oliver Odle and Martin Beno held the Golden Lions to just three hits.
Kent started the contest and improved to 4-0 with a 5.1 inning effort in which he tied a career high with seven strikeouts. The sophomore southpaw allowed just one earned run.
The Cowboys used a four-run rally with two outs to propel them to the win.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Ridling delivered a two-RBI single to give OSU the lead. Two batters later, pinch hitter Donnie Webb delivered a two-run single of his own to give the Cowboys a 5-1 advantage.
The Cowboys would score twice more in the next inning, getting the first run when Steve Ptak stole home on a double steal and scoring again on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Mach.
OSU would have to win the second game in come-from-behind fashion, thanks to a career game from Ridling.
UAPB took an early 1-0 lead on Jerome McCollum's RBI single in the top of the third off Cowboy starter Tyler Blandford, and the Golden Lions were ahead 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth.
But another four-run rally changed all that.
Ty Wright led off the sixth with a single and after Matt Mangini singled, Ridling blasted a three-run home run over the left-field wall to give OSU a 4-2 advantage. The Cowboys added another run on an RBI single by Webb.
OSU rallied for three runs in the seventh, getting RBI hits from Mach, Mangini and Ridling, and then put the visitors away in the eighth.
In that frame, Ryan Pittman led off with a double and scored on a single by Wright. Three batters later, Ridling hit his second three-run homer of the game. The blast was Ridling's eighth home run of the season and capped a 3-for-5 effort in which the junior first baseman collected a career-high seven RBIs.
Ridling's seven-RBI day was the first time a Cowboy drove in seven runs in a game since Rusty Ryal achieved the feat on April, 5, 2005, against UAPB.
Blandford racked up a career-high seven strikeouts in the game, and Matt Willis earned his first-career win with 1.1 innings of relief work.
Several Cowboys extended hitting streaks Wednesday, with Mach having now hit safely in a season-high 16 games and Wright in 15 straight. Ridling has hit in nine consecutive contests.
OSU returns to Big 12 Conference action Friday when they open a series in College Station, Texas, against Texas A&M. The opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with the final two games of the series set to begin at 1 p.m.
