April 16, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State opened a Sunday doubleheader with a 5-3 win over Kansas State, but the 14th-ranked Cowboys could not complete a Sunday sweep as they dropped the nightcap, 7-1, at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the split, OSU is now 26-9 overall and 7-4 in Big 12 Conference play, while the Wildcats are 23-12 and 5-6 in the league. The two teams will battle for the series win Monday at 2 p.m.
In Sunday's opener, the Cowboys got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the second. Rebel Ridling tripled to left field, and a single by Steve Ptak gave OSU a 1-0 lead.
They would double that lead in the third, taking a 2-0 advantage on Ty Wright's solo home run to left-center field. It was Wright's fourth homer of the season.
KSU tied the score in the fifth, getting a pair of runs off sophomore Jeff Breedlove, who made his first start of the season and second of his career in Sunday's opener.
Byron Wiley's single plated Drew Biery with K-State's first run, and an RBI sacrifice bunt by Eli Rumler tied the score at 2-2.
The Cowboys regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth as they rallied for two runs off KSU starter Brad Hutt. Ptak's second RBI single of the contest made the score 3-2, and a sacrifice fly by Kendall Horner gave OSU a two-run lead.
OSU tallied its final run in the eighth on an RBI single by Horner, which helped Josh Fritsche earn his first win of the season.
A senior southpaw, Fritsche worked three scoreless innings in relief and allowed just one hit while striking out four.
Justin Friend came on in relief of Fritsche in the eighth, and worked the final 1.1 innings for his team leading fifth save of the season.
The Cowboys' bats never got going in the second contest as left hander KSU Chase Bayuk tossed 8.1 innings to improve to 3-3 on the season. Bayuk allowed just one run on seven hits in picking up the win.
K-State got out to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap with a pair of runs off Andrew Oliver in the second frame. Oliver lasted just 1.2 innings and suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 5-1.
OSU scored its only run in the fifth. After a double by Horner, Kevin David singled to put runners on first and third. Wright then delivered an RBI single to make the score 2-1, but that was as close as the Cowboys would get.
The Wildcats scored five runs off six different OSU relievers over the final four innings to earn the win. Adam Muenster led KSU with a 4-for-6 effort.
Ridling paced the Cowboys' offense Sunday with four hits, including a 3-for-4 effort in the opener. Wright had three hits and extended his hitting streak to 12 games, while Tyler Mach also had hits in both contests and has now hit safely in 13-straight games.
