Cowboy Offense Puts On A Show In 21-2 Win
April 12, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State set season highs in runs and hits, and Matt Gardner returned to the mound for the first time in more than a month as the Cowboys routed Arkansas State, 21-2, at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium on Wednesday.
Led by Corey Brown and Tyler Mach, who each homered twice, the 14th-ranked Cowboys collected 25 hits and topped their previous season high in runs by two. Five different Pokes had at least three hits in the contest as OSU improved to 25-8 on the season.
Gardner, a junior who had not pitched since starting against Pepperdine on March 9, returned to the hill and worked five shutout innings to improve to 4-0 on the season. The right hander allowed just two hits and has now won nine-straight decisions dating back to last season.
OSU was in control throughout as the Cowboys took a 3-0 in their first at bat on a two-RBI double by Mach and an RBI sacrifice fly by Rebel Ridling.
The Cowboys led 4-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, and that's when their offense exploded for the first of two huge innings.
Coach Frank Anderson's club rallied for seven runs on six hits in the frame. Kevin David's RBI single got the scoring started, and RBIs from Kendall Horner and Ty Wright made the score 7-0. Then it was time for Brown and Mach, with Brown collecting a two-RBI double and Mach blasting a two-run home run to complete the big inning.
OSU would top that outburst in the seventh as this time the Cowboys sent 13 batters to the plate and struck for nine runs on nine hits.
Brown got things started with a home run to open the inning, and after the Cowboys scored five more runs, Brown came up again with a runner on. And again he would deliver, hitting his second homer of the inning. It was also the junior's 14th round tripper of the season, which set his career season high.
Next up was Mach, who followed suit with his second homer of the contest to give the senior second baseman nine home runs on the season.
Wright's four-hit day led the Cowboys, and he also added three RBIs and scored three times. Brown finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs, while Mach was 3-for-6 and tied a career high with five RBIs.
David and Steve Ptak also had three hits apiece for the Cowboys.
OSU returns to Big 12 Conference action Friday when they open a series against Kansas State at Reynolds Stadium. Friday's opener is set for a 6:30 p.m. start, with Saturday's contest beginning at 2 p.m. The two teams will close out the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
