March 25, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Oklahoma State committed three costly errors, and the 14th-ranked Cowboys suffered a 6-3 loss to Kansas on Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark.
The loss dropped OSU to 18-6 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play, while Kansas improved to 15-13 and 2-3 in league play. The two teams will play the series-deciding finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
OSU struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Matt Mangini and Jordy Mercer singled, and a third single, this one by Dylan Brown, accounted for a pair of runs. Brown was credited with an RBI on Mangini's run, and a throwing error by KU center fielder Kyle Murphy allowed Mercer to score and give the Cowboys a 2-0 lead.
The Jayhawks tied the score in the bottom of the third against OSU starter Justin Friend on a bases-loaded, two-RBI single by John Allman. Both runs were unearned.
KU took the lead with two more runs off Friend in the fourth as Justin Ellrich and Preston Land collected RBI hits to make the score 4-2.
The Cowboys cut their deficit to one in the fifth when Keanon Simon scored from third on a throwing error by KU catcher Buck Afenir.
In the sixth, the Jayhawks pushed their lead back to three with the final runs of the contest. An Allman sacrifice fly plated the first run, and an error by OSU second baseman Tyler Mach allowed Kyle Murphy to score from second to give KU a 6-3 advantage.
Just three of Kansas' six runs in the game were earned.
Friend suffered the loss for the Cowboys to fall to 2-2 on the season. The junior right hander lasted 3.2 innings and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out four.
Eight of the starters in OSU's lineup collected hits, but none had more than one. Senior Keanon Simon was 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to nine games, while Brown collected the only RBI for the Cowboys.
KU starter Zach Ashwood worked six innings and struck out four to improve to 3-2 on the season, while Paul Smyth held the Cowboys scoreless and allowed just one hit over the final three innings to earn his fifth save.
