March 19, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
IRVING, Texas - Oklahoma State capped a successful week on the field with a pair of individual awards as outfielder Corey Brown and pitcher Justin Friend earned Big 12 Conference Player and Co-Pitcher of the Week awards, it was announced by the conference on Monday.
A junior right fielder from Tampa, Fla., Brown garnered his first-career Big 12 Player of the Week award after a six-game stretch that saw him hit .429 (9-for-21) with five home runs and 15 RBIs. He also scored 12 runs, had a 1.143 slugging percentage and was 5-of-5 on stolen base attempts.
Brown homered in four of the Cowboys' six games last week, including a two-home run, five-RBI performance in the first game of a doubleheader win against Hartford. He is hitting .393 on the season and leads OSU with 10 homers and 35 RBIs. He ranks in the top three in the Big 12 in nine offensive categories.
Friend was equally as dominant on the mound for the Cowboys, and the junior from Manteca, Calif., shares Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors with Texas A&M's Kyle Nicholson. It is also the first Big 12 weekly award for Friend.
A right hander, Friend made two appearances last week and was 1-0 with 16 strikeouts in 9.1 innings. He allowed just four hits and one unearned run in those two outings.
In his first-career start Sunday against Hartford, Friend tossed 8.1 innings and recorded 13 strikeouts. It was the most strikeouts by an OSU pitcher this season and the most by a Cowboy since 2005. In the game against the Hawks, Friend allowed just four hits and an unearned run while walking two to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Brown and Friend helped OSU compile a 5-1 record last week, and the duo joins Oliver Odle, who earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors in February, as Cowboys to be be honored by the league this season.
The 14th-ranked Cowboys (17-5) return to action Friday as they open Big 12 Conference play in Lawrence, Kan., against the Kansas Jayhawks.
