Scott, Hendricks Advance to Finals at Wrestling Championships

Coleman Scott upset top-seeded Nick Simmons in the semifinals and Johny Hendricks won his fourth one-point match over

“I think we have obviously overachieved,” head coach John Smith said. “It was a good effort, we just needed a little bit more. It was an uphill battle for some of these guys to score.”
Scott jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Simmons, who he had never defeated in four career matches, with a takedown and two-point near fall. Simmons was given two points for an illegal hold and a stall warning to close to within a point. Scott held on and advanced to meet second-seeded Matt Valenti of
“My knee was a little sore (after hurting it in the quarterfinals),” Scott said. “I knew I had to wrestle. I came back this morning and got it done, and I hope to save my best for tomorrow.”
Johny Hendricks had another classic battle with rival Paulson. The match went into a tie-breaker tied at one with both wrestlers scoring an escape in regulation. Hendricks escaped just before the buzzer and rode Paulson for the full 30 seconds to pick up the victory.
The win was Hendricks' 56th consecutive victory as he moved into a tie for fourth-place on OSU's all-time wins list with 127.
“Paulson is a good wrestler,” Hendricks said. “He definitely made it tough on me. I have wrestled him every year the last four years. He has definitely made it tough on me. I have Mark Perry tomorrow and I still have to view him as a threat. I am not really too interested in anybody else, which is what makes me successful at this tournament. I do not care about anybody else. I only worry about me; I do not want to worry about them. Just line them up and lets wrestle.”
Nathan Morgan and Brandon Mason both lost semifinal matches to the No. 2 seed. Morgan gave up a third period takedown to Derek Moore of UC-Davis and lost, 6-2, while Mason yielded a pair of takedowns to
Morgan and Mason will both have an opportunity to wrestle back for third-place. Both will first have to wrestle a consolation match and will then wrestle for either third or fifth.
