Cowboys Make Move on Second Day of Wrestling Championships

Oklahoma State went 4-for-4 in the quarterfinals as Johny Hendricks recorded a major decision and Brandon Mason upset his second seeded wrestler at the NCAA Championships in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Coleman Scott and Nathan Morgan became the first Cowboy semifinalists as they eked out narrow decisions in the final seconds at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively.

OSU made a charge in the team standings with their four quarterfinal victories and moved from eighth to third. The Cowboys have 48.5 points and trail Minnesota and Iowa State with 66 and 62.5, respectively.

Scott had to score a reversal just to force the extra period and then he struck quick on fifth-seeded Matt Keller of Tennessee-Chattanooga with a double leg takedown. It is his first appearance in the semifinals and he will meet top-seeded Nick Simmons of Michigan State, who he has never defeated in four career matches.

Morgan trailed 11^th-seeded Charles Griffin of Hofstra by a point late in the third period, but a late reversal and ride out gave Morgan a two-point victory. Morgan will face second-seeded Derek Moore of UC-Davis in the semifinals. Moore defeated Morgan, 5-2, in the season opener in Stillwater back on Nov. 12.

Hendricks is making a bid for Outstanding Wrestler as he majored ninth-seeded Matt Pell of Missouri, 10-2. Hendricks scored four takedowns in the match, and he got the final takedown in the closing seconds to secure the major decision. Hendricks will face Big 12 rival Travis Paulson of Iowa State in the semis.

Brandon Mason scored a takedown in the first period, and he closed out the match with a takedown in the third period to defeat the No. 11 seed, Jeremy Larson of Oregon State. Mason earned his first All-America honor as he joined the Cowboy contingent in the semifinals. He will face the No. 2 seed, Keith Gavin from Pittsburgh.

Tyler Shinn advanced to the round of 12 with a pair of consolation wins. Shinn will meet seventh-seeded Angel Escobedo of Indiana with the winner earning All-America honors.

Jack Jensen won a consolation match before being eliminated by Indiana's Marc Bennett. Jared Rosholt was also eliminated as he fell to sixth-seeded Ed Prendergast of Navy in the consolation bracket.
