Cowboys Complete Friday's Practice with Scrimmage
March 16, 2007 | Cowboy Football
Head coach Mike Gundy praised the effort of both the offensive and defensive squads, but cautioned that there's certainly room for improvement.
"We had good effort today, but there were way too many mistakes on both sides of the ball," said Gundy. "Offensively, we had too many penalties. Part of that's going to come with a lot of young guys playing, but there were just too many penalties for as far along as we are offensively. We've got a long ways to go to tighen things up, eliminating mistakes and protecting the ball.
"Defensively, they made all the tough plays and gave up all the easy ones. Way too many big plays. They did a nice job on the normal 1st-&-10 situations, but then gave up big, big pass plays. I do think that we tackled better. I was pleased with our tackling."
Several players stood out, including All-Big 12 wide receiver Adarius Bowman, who had several big plays. Freshman tailback Keith Toston also played well during the scrimmage. Cornerback Martel Van Zant made an interception inside the red zone, to which the entire defensive squad waved both hands in the air, the sign for "applause" in sign language.
The players will be given a week off for spring break before returning to the field on Monday, March 26, for the final three weeks of practice.
