OSU Spring Football Practice Continues Wednesday
March 14, 2007 | Cowboy Football
Oklahoma State took part in its most physical practice of the spring Wednesday afternoon, culminating with a brief scrimmage to close the session.
“It was another good practice with a lot of enthusiasm,” head coach Mike Gundy said. “Jacob Lacey made some plays and Keith Toston ran the ball well.” Gundy also cited defensive back Calvin Mickens and tight end Brandon Pettigrew for their efforts.
The Cowboys had their first serious pad-popping practice of the spring with the first and second teams squaring off during a brief live scrimmage at the end of the workout. OSU will devote approximately half of Friday's practice to a scrimmage.
“Competition is the greatest thing going and there's been good competition through the first five practices,” Gundy added. “At times last year the offense was productive and maybe it wore the defense down as the season wore on. This spring the defense is playing with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement so it's going to stir up the offense.”
The Cowboys were joined on the practice field by first-team all-Big 12 wide receiver Adarius Bowman, who took part in his first drills of the spring after spending the winter with the OSU basketball team. In another spring development, linebacker Rod Johnson continues to get some reps at defensive end.
“It's not a position change,”Gundy said of Johnson. “It's more about depth on the defensive line. Rod is big enough at 250 pounds to help us out there if we need it.”
“I'm concerned about depth in the defensive line, but not about the work ethic we're getting out of them,” Gundy said. “You'd like to always have four guys to rotate, but we don't have that luxury right now.”
The Cowboys will conclude their pre-spring break workouts on Friday afternoon. Following that workout, the Cowboys won't return to practice until March 26th.
