Cowboys Open Season With 5-2 Win Over Lamar
February 09, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
Oklahoma State scored in its first at bat of 2007 and never looked back as the No. 21 Cowboys topped Lamar, 5-2, in the Citrus Tournament at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Seven different Cowboys collected hits in the game, and OSU turned four double plays as the Pokes improved to 49-20-1 all-time in season openers.
“It was a good start for us,” said OSU coach Frank Anderson. “We played good, clean defense and pitched well. We faced a tough left-handed pitcher, but we came up with some timely hits.”
Senior Ty Wright opened the season in dramatic fashion when he blasted a home run over the left-center field wall off Lamar's Allen Harrington on the game's first at-bat.
The Cowboys took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on Ryan Flavell's two-out RBI single up the middle. The hit scored Dylan Brown, who led off the inning with a single.
Lamar got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Jeff Vickers homered to left to make the score 2-1.
That would be the only run OSU starter Matt Gardner would allow. The junior right hander worked five innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four to earn the win.
OSU added to its lead in the seventh with another two-out rally. Corey Brown tripled off the center field wall to score Ryan Flavell, and a single by Tyler Mach plated Brown to make the score 4-1.
The Cardinals again cut the score in half in the bottom of the eighth as Collin DeLome singled up the middle to bring home Erik Kanaby from second base and make the score 4-2.
OSU tallied its final run in the ninth with Mach smashing a solo homer to left. Mach finished the contest 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
Junior Justin Friend, who came on in relief of Gardner, allowed just one run in three innings of work, while sophomore Jeff Breedlove recorded his first career save with a scoreless ninth inning.
OSU returns to action Saturday when the Cowboys face McNeese State at 3 p.m.
