Mach's Five-RBI Day Lifts Cowboys Over Dallas Baptist
February 28, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
Mach bashed a pair of two-run home runs, and five Cowboy hurlers combined for 15 strikeouts as OSU improved to 7-3 on the season. The Cowboys are now 56-14 all time in home openers.
OSU's second baseman got the scoring started in the first inning. Keanon Simon led off the frame with a single, and two batters later, Mach delivered his first homer off DBU starter Brett Lester over the left-field wall for a 2-0 Cowboy lead.
The Cowboys increased their lead in the third. Mach doubled to left field, and an error on the play allowed Corey Brown to score. OSU made it 4-0 on a two-out RBI single by Rebel Ridling. It was Ridling's 11th RBI of the season, with eight of those coming with two outs.
DBU (5-6) got on the scoreboard in the fourth as they scored a pair of runs against OSU starter Joe Kent. Austin Krum led off the inning with a home run, and Nick Santos had an RBI single to make the score 4-2.
That was the extent of the damage against Kent, who pitched four innings for his first win of the season and second of his career. The sophomore southpaw struck out a career-high seven and allowed just four hits.
OSU struck for two more runs in the fourth, with Mach collecting an RBI with a single and Matt Mangini picking up an RBI walk.
The Cowboys' biggest inning came in the sixth as they rallied for four runs. Mach's second homer of the day gave OSU an 8-2 lead, while Donnie Webb drove in a run with a single and Kevin David collected an RBI on a groundout to provide the Pokes' final two scores.
Mach finished the day 4-for-5, and the five RBIs tied the career high that he previously set against Dallas Baptist last season. Simon, Mangini and Dylan Brown each had two hits for the Cowboys.
OSU returns to action Friday when they open a three-game series against Nicholls State at Reynolds Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
