Cowboys Suffer First Loss Of Season
February 19, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
Errors proved costly to Oklahoma State at the FAU Beach Ball Bash Saturday as the Cowboys suffered their first loss of the season with a 9-6 setback against Florida Atlantic.
The 16th-ranked Cowboys committed four errors in the contest as they fell to 4-1, while FAU ace Mickey Storey struck out a career-high 12 in 7.2 innings of work to help the Owls improve to 8-0.
OSU took an early lead in its initial at bat. Keanon Simon was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and later stole second. Tyler Mach then delivered an RBI single up the middle to make the score 1-0. That advantage quickly became 2-0 when Matt Mangini singled through the left side to score Mach, who had advanced to second base on an error.
FAU trimmed the Cowboys' lead in half in the bottom of the first, with an error by Mach leading to an unearned run. That run was delivered on a sacrifice fly by Mike McKenna to make the score 2-1.
The Cowboys continued their hot hitting against FAU's ace in the second inning, and as they have all season, OSU came up big with two outs. Matt Lopez opened the rally with a single and scored on a triple by Simon. Corey Brown followed that with an RBI double to make the score 4-1, and Mach then delivered his second RBI single of the contest to give coach Frank Anderson's club a four-run advantage.
Again, the Owls answered in the bottom of the inning, with Daniel Cook drilling a solo home run over the right-field wall to make the score 5-2.
In the third, OSU added another run on Ryan Flavell's RBI single, a hit that scored Rebel Ridling to give the Cowboys a 6-2 lead.
FAU erupted offensively in the third to erase the Cowboys' big lead. The first run came via the long ball once again as William Block led off the frame with a solo homer to left that made the score 6-3. Two batters later, OSU's lead was cut to two as Robbie Widlansky tripled to score Daniel Bomback, and an RBI double by McKenna made the score 6-5.
OSU's defense let it down in the fourth as a pair of errors cost the Cowboys the lead. The first miscue came by Matt Lopez as he mishandled a ground ball that potentially would have resulted in a double play. The Owls took advantage as Widlansky singled to score Nick Arata and tie the score, and FAU took the lead on the play as OSU right fielder Corey Brown committed a two-base error that allowed Block to score for a 7-6 FAU lead.
The Owls would plate runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to increase their lead, while OSU failed to score over the final six innings.
Justin Friend suffered the loss for the Cowboys to drop to 0-1 on the season. The junior right hander allowed three runs on three hits in 2.2 innings in relief of OSU starter Oliver Odle, who lasted just 2.1 innings.
Mach, Mangini and Flavell each collected two hits apiece to lead the OSU offense.
OSU concludes play in the FAU Beach Ball Bash at 9 a.m. Sunday against Ball State.
