Cowboys Remain Perfect With 8-2 Win Over La Salle
February 19, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
Oklahoma State improved to 4-0 on the season as the 16th-ranked Cowboys topped La Salle, 8-2, in the opening game of the FAU Beach Ball Bash at FAU Stadium.
Six different Cowboys collected RBIs in the contest, and junior right hander Matt Gardner picked up the win on the mound with a six-inning effort to improve to 2-0 on the season. It was Gardner's seventh-straight win dating back to last season as he struck out five and allowed two runs on five hits.
OSU opened with a run in its first at bat. Keanon Simon led off the bottom of the first with a hustling double to center field and after taking third on a groundout, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Mach.
La Salle (0-1) took the lead in the top of the third. John Malloy led off the inning with a double, and Justin Handler followed with an infield single to put Explorers at first and third. Rich Prall then delivered an RBI single through the right side to make it 1-1. Just two batters later, La Salle took a 2-1 advantage as Handler scored from third on a double play by the Cowboys.
La Salle's lead was short lived as the Cowboys plated three runs with two outs in the bottom of the third. Simon again started the rally with a double, and back-to-back singles by Matt Mangini and Rebel Ridling put OSU ahead by a 3-2 count. The final run came on an RBI single by John Schindler.
OSU added to its lead in the fourth on yet another two-out hit, this one an infield single by Corey Brown that scored Ryan Flavell to make the score 5-2. Flavell led off the inning with a single.
The Cowboys added some insurance in the eighth with three runs. Flavell doubled to begin the rally and scored on a single by Simon. Matt Lopez, who walked, would score on an error, and OSU plated its final run in the contest on an RBI triple by Mach.
Freshman Tyler Lyons earned the save in his first-career appearance for the Cowboys as the southpaw tossed the final three innings and did not allow a run while striking out three.
Simon led the OSU offense with a 3-for-5 performance, while Corey Brown, Mangini, Ridling and Flavell each collected two hits apiece.
OSU returns to action Saturday against host Florida Atlantic. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
