Cowboys Shut Out McNeese State
February 11, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
Oliver Odle had a career day and combined with Martin Beno to shut out McNeese State on Saturday as Oklahoma State earned a 7-0 win in the Citrus Tournament at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Odle worked seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out a career-high 10. The senior right hander struck out five of the first six batters he faced, tying his career high for strikeouts after just two innings.
“All my stuff was working today,” said Odle, who helped OSU improve to 2-0 on the season. “I love pitching in the cold weather. I'm not really a strikeout pitcher, it was just a good day. It felt good to come out in my first game of the season and pitch like that.”
The Cowboys got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth against MSU (0-2) starter Chris Denton. Corey Brown led off the inning with a triple to right field, and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Mach gave OSU a 1-0 advantage.
OSU added to its lead in the sixth. With two outs, Mach doubled down the left-field line, and Matt Mangini followed with an RBI single to make the score 2-0.
In the seventh, Keanon Simon plated the Cowboys' third run. The senior outfielder walked, then stole second. He also stole third and scored on the play on MSU catcher Jeramie Broussard's throwing error.
The Cowboys erupted for four insurance runs in the ninth as they sent eight batters to the plate.
Matt Lopez doubled, his first-career hit, to start the rally, and the redshirt freshman would score on a double by Mach. Also scoring on the play was Corey Brown, who reached home on an error by the right fielder to make the score 5-0. OSU recorded its sixth run on an RBI double by Mangini, and John Schindler brought him home with a single to provide the final 7-0 margin.
Beno, a junior who entered the game in the eighth with OSU leading 3-0, earned the save in his first-career appearance for the Cowboys.
Mach and Mangini combined for eight of the Cowboys' 12 hits in the contest. Mach was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Mangini had four hits in five at bats and also drove in two runs.
OSU closes out its appearance in the Citrus Tournament at 9 a.m. Sunday against Illinois-Chicago.
