Last Time Out
On October 26th, the Cowgirls finished in fifth place at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas. The Cowgirls had all five scorers finish in the top 50, including Mihaela Susa who finished 15th with a time of 21:24. The finish earned the freshman all-Big 12 recognition.
The Cowboys also competed in the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, finishing 2nd behind defending champion Colorado. THe Cowboys had a brilliant performance and had a league-high five runners named all-Big 12 and had the newcomer of the year in sophomore David Chirchir. Ryan Vail led the way for Oklahoma State, finishing third with a time of 24:36.
Event History
The Cowboys have won three of the last four Midwest Regional Championships and two consecutive. Jankowski recorded a seventh place finish at last year's event, best among Cowboy retuners.
The Cowgirls finished fifth last season at the MIdwest Regional Championships. Tomankova is the top returner from last year's regional squad-she posted a 33rd place at last year's event.
Coaches Corner
Cowboy head coach Dave Smith looks to repeat as champions again, but said the main goal is getting everyone prepared and healthy for nationals.
“We aren't necessarily looking to have an individual win this race,” said Smith. “We'll probably have the team running together and because there times have been so close, we'll have a good chance at still winning the event.”
“Our goal is to be ready for Nationals and make sure that everyone is healthy.”
Cowgirl head coach Rene Sepulveda said his goals for this weekend's NCAA Regionals are to match last season's finish of fifth and get as much experience as possible for his squad. Although the loss of Hjalmarsen and Lustigova could hurt the Cowgirls' chances of making waves on the scoreboard this weekend, it should provide a momentum boost as Oklahoma State looks towards the 2008 season.
“Our regional is so good now and we know that we really have our work cut out for us to make it to that next level,” said Sepulveda. “It's a lot of work, but things are really coming along the way we want them to be.”
