No. 3 Oklahoma State Competes At Northeast Duals Saturday
November 21, 2007 | Cowboy Wrestling
The Basics
No. 3 Oklahoma State travels to Troy, N.Y., to take part in the Journeymen/Brute Northeast Duals this Saturday. The all-day event takes place at Hudson Valley Community College with an opening ceremony at 8:45 a.m. central time and the actual wrestling beginning 15 minutes later when the Cowboys take on Binghamton.
Oklahoma State faces Clarion at 11 a.m. central, No. 13 Hofstra at 1 p.m. central and American at 3 p.m. central.
The Northeast Duals mark the Cowboys' first team action of the season, as OSU began the season with trips to the Central Missouri Open and the Kaufman Brand Open, with All-American Nathan Morgan then representing OSU at the NWCA All-Star Classic.
Series History vs. Opponents
When Oklahoma State faces Binghamton, it will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
An interesting note about the series with Clarion is that with a 1-1 series record against the Cowboys, Clarion is the only team that OSU has ever wrestled that it does not hold a winning record over.
Oklahoma State is 2-0 all-time against Hofstra and faces American for the first time ever when the two teams take the mat at the Northeast Duals.
Five Things to Watch
1. Three-time All-American Coleman Scott is set to return to the lineup after sustaining a knee injury at the Central Missouri Open. The nation's No. 1 wrestler at 133 pounds, Scott sat out the NWCA All-Star Classic while continuing to recover.
2. When Oklahoma State and Hofstra face off, the 141-pound matchup could be an interesting one to track, as OSU's second-ranked Nathan Morgan would likely get a rematch with the Pride's fifth-ranked Charles Griffin. The two met earlier in the week when Griffin handed Morgan a 9-4 setback as part of the NWCA All-Star Classic in Eugene, Ore.
3. Speaking of the NWCA All-Star Classic and the Oklahoma State-Hofstra matchup, Coleman Scott could face the person who replaced him at the All-Star Classic if he matches up against Hofstra 133-pounder Lou Ruggirello. Scott was slated to face Minnesota's Mack Reiter at the prestigious event before sustaining his injury. Instead, Ruggirello stepped in and handed Reiter a 6-0 defeat.
4. Senior 165-pounder Jake Dieffenbach is slated to make his OSU debut this weekend after missing the first two open tournaments of the year while recovering from a knee injury sustained in one of the Cowboys' early practice sessions. Dieffenbach was a two-time NAIA Champion at Lindenwood University before graduating with a year of eligibility remaining. He attends graduate school at OSU and will finish out his career wearing the orange singlet.
5. The Oklahoma State coaching staff continues to firm up who will start for the Cowboys this year, and the weight classes to watch this weekend will be 165, 184 and 197. Dieffenbach is the likely starter, but remains a bit unproven coming off his injury. Fellow 165-pounder Kevin Wainscott is also making the trip to New York and could end up as the starter if Dieffenbach is not ready to go. Cody Hill is the only 184-pounder on the trip, but he has to unseat returning NCAA qualifier Jack Jensen to earn the starting spot. OSU's returning starter at 197 pounds, Jared Shelton has stiff competition in the OSU wrestling room from freshman Clayton Foster and would help his case with a strong performance at the Northeast Duals.
Foster and Parks Are Freshmen To Remember
Oklahoma State's current freshman class is providing reason for great optimism, as 197-pounder Clayton Foster is 9-0 so far this year, winning his weight class at both the Central Missouri Open and at the Kaufman Brand Open. Wrestling at 133 pounds, Jamal Parks is off to a 9-1 start this year, with his lone loss coming at the hands of 2007 NCAA qualifier and Cowboy teammate Tyler Shinn. Parks won his weight class at the Kaufman Brand Open and took third at the Central Missouri Open behind only Shinn and three-time All-American Coleman Scott.
OSU Signs Four In Early Signing Period
Oklahoma State wrestling coach John Smith announced the signing of four prep standouts to national letters of intent during the early signing period. Alex Meade (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney HS), Jordan Oliver (Easton, Pa./Easton HS), Johnny Koepp (Forney, Texas/Bishop Lynch) and Tyson Yoder (Weatherford, Okla./Weatherford) are set to join the most storied program in all of college sports.
“I'm excited about this class because we are picking up some needs that we will have for the future, specifically at 133 and 165,” Smith said. “We're confident that Jordan Oliver has a good future at 133 and Alex Meade has a good future at 165. Both have demonstrated the ability to win at a high level and that's what excites me about this class. I can see Tyson Yoder as wrestling at 197 for us in the future and Johnny Koepp is likely to begin his time here wrestling at 157,” Smith said. “It's very nice to have an Oklahoma kid coming here in Yoder and I believe that Koepp is a very talented wrestler who has been well-coached in high school.”
Meade is a two-time FILA cadet freestyle national champion, winning the distinction in 2005 and in 2007. He won the Beast of the East Tournament and finished his junior year ranked No. 1 in the nation at 145 pounds. He enters his senior year ranked No. 3 nationally at 152 pounds.
Oliver is a 2007 freestyle junior national champion who is ranked No. 2 in the nation at the 125-pound weight class entering the 2007-08 season. He is a two-time Pennsylvania state champion.
Koepp is part of the same Bishop Lynch pipeline that has produced five current members of the Oklahoma State wrestling team and took third at Beast of the East last year.
Yoder won the Oklahoma state title in 2006 and was the runner up in 2007. He is ranked No. 4 in the nation at the 215-pound weight class heading into his senior year.
