Cowgirls Fall To Top-Ranked UCLA
November 19, 2007 | Cowgirl Soccer
LOS ANGELES Â Oklahoma State's season came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship Sunday afternoon as top-ranked UCLA defeated the Cowgirls, 4-0, at Drake Stadium.
The loss marks the second-straight season OSU has fallen in the NCAA tourney's second round. The Cowgirls end the season 14-6-3, with their 14 wins the third-most in program history.
“I'm really proud of our team and our effort,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “We knew the challenge we had coming here. UCLA is a No. 1 seed and the No. 1 unanimous team in the country for a reason. They took advantage of opportunities, and they're as good as advertised.
“I thought some of our possession soccer against a very good team was great to watch. We just struggled to find that breakthrough against a very good back four and goalkeeper.”
The Bruins (18-1-2) got on the scoreboard just over four minutes into the match as sophomore Lauren Cheney netted her 21st goal of the season, taking a pass in the box from Christina DiMartino and booting it past OSU goalie Erin Stigler.
OSU took just two shots in the opening half and barely missed a score at the 2:10 mark as a shot by Yolanda Odenyo bounced off the near post.
Leading 1-0 at intermission, UCLA added its second goal just 54 seconds into the second half. This time it was Danesha Adams drilling a shot into the far upper post to give the Bruins a 2-0 advantage. Cheney and McCall Zerboni recorded assists on the play.
The Bruins added their third goal in the 65th minute as Kristina Larsen took a pass from DiMartino and found the back of the net from 17 yards.
UCLA's final goal came at the 20:24 mark as Adams converted a penalty kick following an OSU foul in the box to make the score 4-0.
OSU was outshot by a 20-5 margin in the match. Stigler recorded six saves for the Cowgirls.
“Our team had a great season, with some great wins and great moments,” Carmichael said. “We keep building. We've had two very good years in a row, and next year we return most of these kids. We're very excited about the future and the direction we're heading.
“I'm very proud of these girls today and all season long.”
