Coleman Scott Out For All-Star Classic
After sustaining a knee injury in the championship match of the Central Missouri Open on Nov. 11, Oklahoma State three-time All-America wrestler Coleman Scott will not compete at Monday's NWCA All-Star Classic in Eugene, Ore., as originally scheduled. Scott's return to the mat is considered as day-to-day.
The nation's top-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds, Scott was slated to face Minnesota's Mack Reiter in Eugene, but has been replaced by Hofstra's Lou Rugirello.
OSU's History At The NWCA All-Star Classic
Throughout the years, Oklahoma State has had its fingerprints all over the NWCA All-Star Matches, with the Cowboys being represented 79 times since the inception of the event in 1967. When Morgan takes the mat Monday, it will mark the 80th time that the Cowboys have been part of the prestigious event.
Additionally, Oklahoma State hosted the NWCA All-Star Matches in Stillwater in 1967, 1968, 1971, 1974, 1986, 1999 and in 2006.
Cowboy wrestlers have combined to compile a 38-35-6 overall record at the NWCA All-Star Matches.
OSU All-Stars Multiple Times Over
With Nathan Morgan competing at the NWCA All-Star Classic for the second consecutive year, it brings about the question of how many Cowboys have been to the event more than once.
Prior to Morgan's appearance this year, a total of 19 Oklahoma State wrestlers have made multiple appearances at the NWCA All-Star Classic, with Billy Martin (1973, 1974, 1975), Alan Fried (1991, 1992, 1994) and Chris Pendleton (2003, 2004, 2005) the only three-time competitors in school history.
Learning From NWCA All-Star Experience
Each of the three members of the Oklahoma State coaching staff competed at the NWCA All-Star Classic during their respective careers. Head Coach John Smith was part of the field in 1987 and 1988, associate head coach Mark Branch competed in 1995 and 1997 and assistant coach Eric Guerrero took the mat in 1999.
Future NWCA All-Star Classic Candidates
Oklahoma State's current freshman class is providing reason for great optimism, as 197 pounder Clayton Foster is 9-0 so far this year, winning his weight class at both the Central Missouri Open and at the Kaufman Brand Open. Wrestling at 133 pounds, Jamal Parks is off to a 9-1 start this year, with his lone loss coming at the hands of 2007 NCAA qualifier and Cowboy teammate Tyler Shinn. Parks won his weight class at the Kaufman Brand Open and took third at the Central Missouri Open behind only Shinn and three-time All-American Coleman Scott.
