OSU Sends Selected Wrestlers To Kaufman-Brand Open

The Basics
No. 3 Oklahoma State sends selected wrestlers to compete in the Kaufman-Brand Open at the Lee and Helene Sapp Fieldhouse in Omaha, Neb., this Saturday. The all-day event begins at 9 a.m.

Cowboys To Watch At The Kaufman-Brand
With most of OSU's starting lineup not in action this weekend, the Kaufman-Brand Open provides several of the Cowboys' unproven wrestlers with a chance to make an impression. Perhaps the most intriguing storyline for OSU this weekend is that of senior Jake Dieffenbach, who graduated from Lindenwood University with a year of eligibility remaining. Dieffenbach was a two-time NAIA champion and a three-time NAIA finalist during his time at Lindenwood and is a strong candidate for the starting spot at 165 pounds. He has been sidelined for a chunk of the preseason with a knee injury and the Kaufman-Brand Open marks his first time suiting up for the Cowboys, as he did not compete at the Orange and Black Dual nor the Central Missouri Open.
Another OSU wrestler to watch in Omaha is freshman 197-pounder Clayton Foster, who won his weight class at the Central Missouri Open by beating teammate and returning Cowboy starter Jared Shelton in the title bout.
Foster remains very much in the hunt for the starting spot at 197 pounds even as a true freshman.
Redshirt freshman Neil Erisman is another key figure in action this weekend, as he has a chance to crack into the lineup at 157 pounds.
Recapping The Central Missouri Open
Oklahoma State opened its 2007-08 wrestling season with a solid showing at the Central Missouri Open on Nov. 11, as seven different Cowboys won their respective weight classes and an additional five OSU wrestlers were finalists in their respective weight classes.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came when OSU's Tyler Shinn knocked off teammate and top-ranked Coleman Scott with a 3-1 sudden victory in the championship bout at 133 pounds. Shinn and Scott faced each other three times in a span of five days including the Central Missouri Open, with the two going to the wire in each of the three matches. A three-time All-American, Scott handed Shinn a 5-4 setback in ranking matches the Wednesday prior to the CMSU Open, then claimed a 4-3 victory over Shinn at the Orange and Black Dual the next night.
Redshirt freshman Quinten Fuentes further strengthened his grip on a potential starting spot at 149 pounds by winning the weight class at Central Missouri. Fuentes routed Central Oklahoma's Colby Robinson, 10-2 in the championship bout after picking up a pin and a tech fall on his way through the bracket.
