Highlights From Monday's Football Media Luncheon
November 12, 2007 | Cowboy Football
Head Coach Mike Gundy
"I don't really have a lot to say in the opening line other than Adarius Bowman is out for the year. I would prefer to not talk about his injury just for the fact that I'm sure he would not appreciate that. It is a knee injury, it is not severe but he is out for the year."
"Other than that, back to work as normal, preparation for Baylor. The players will be in this evening for practice and we expect Jeremy Nethon to practice today, should have him for the game. Other than that, we didn't sustain any significant injuries in the Kansas game."
On Dez Bryant's role without Bowman
"I think that he'll have to play a bigger factor, but one thing about our offense that I like personally is we can do some things to move the ball around. We can run the ball, we can throw it down the field, we can throw it out in the flat, we don't really have to tie into one guy, but obviously we would prefer to have Bowman in our offense. He gives us some flexibility and some things that we can do with big plays that when you lose him, it's a fact: you're going to lose some big play capability."
On who the offense will look to fill in for Bowman
"Damien Davis. Seth Newton is a guy that's more mature and we can move him around some. Tommy Devereaux becomes a bigger factor, Jeremy Broadway obviously, and probably DeMarcus Connor."
On Chris Collins
"We will have some sort of a conclusion as soon as possible. Once we gather all the facts and we know exactly what's going on, we'll update everybody as soon as possible. The only thing I can say is once we gather all the information, we're going to make a decision and let you guys know, there's not anything we're hiding.
On Baylor's offense last week against Oklahoma
"They moved the ball. They rushed for 180 I think and they threw for a considerable number. They had some big plays. They were able to run the football and did a good job of spreading them out and moving the ball. They have had success this year of getting people open and getting the ball thrown and protected well."
"What they do on offense is they have a good plan. It's just a matter of like anybody else, you just have to execute and they executed pretty well in my opinion the other night."
On Baylor's offensive improvement in the second year of spread offense
"I haven't watched all of their games, I've seen a number of crossover tape and I've watched about three of them. They've had guys open and they've protected and gotten the ball thrown and they do a good job of getting rid of the ball and not taking a lot of sacks."
Senior Wide Receiver Tommy Devereaux
On the potential of becoming bowl eligible this week
“We want to be back in a bowl for all the seniors and we're just going to play our hearts out. Just go out and really have nothing to lose, but we have something to gain. I think that's our motto.”
On not looking past Baylor towards the Oklahoma game
“We're really not thinking about Oklahoma yet. We just know in the back of our mind we've got to play them and that's our big game, but right now we're thinking about getting bowl eligible so this week we have to win this game.”
Freshman defensive end Ugo Chinasa
On bouncing back from loss
“We've got a lot of talent on this team, we just need to put it together one whole game, not just a half or a quarter.”
On getting a sixth win and becoming bowl eligible
“It's very important. You play to win the game, the next game we're playing is Baylor and we need a win.”
On Baylor's offense
“They put up 400 (yards of offense) against Oklahoma, so they've got good receivers and a good line. They're kind of like Texas Tech the way they throw the ball so we need to get pressure on the quarterback.”
Sophomore offensive lineman Russell Okung
On the season being full of ups and downs
“Nobody wants to go up and down, everybody wants to stay straightforward, but this is the time things aren't always going our way. It tests your character, tests what kind of man you are, what type of player you are. We're the type of guys that move forward and don't back down to anybody.”
On bouncing back
“We have the guys that can make the plays, we have the effort. Now all we've got to do is bring it out and show everybody.
On adjusting to loss of Adarius Bowman and play of freshman Dez Bryant
“Dez is a guy that's always going to step up and if we want to win, we're going to need guys to step up.”
