November 10, 2007 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
After battling injuries the last few weeks, the Oklahoma State women's cross country team finished fifth at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Peoria, Ill., on Saturday with three runners in the top 50.
Freshman Mihaela Susa, who recently earned all-Big 12 honors, led the Cowgirls with a 11th place finish in the 6,000-meter run with a time of 20:35. Junior Marcela Lustigova, who has missed the last two cross country events with injuries, was behind her with a time of 21:13 and a 28th place finish.
“I think it was our best performance of the season,” Coach Rene Sepulveda said. “We were ranked fifth going into the race and I was afraid we were going to drop below that because of the injuries we've had. Lena Orn didn't compete today because of an injury. Tone Hjalmarsen and Marcela Lustigova didn't run at the Big 12 Championship because of injuries, but they ran today and did a good job at making up for
“It was a good race. I think every girl that raced got a personal time best. Our goal was to finish in the top five and we did that. Everyone stepped it up today.”
Seniors Maria Trejo and Eva Tomankova finished 36th (21:27) and 51st (21:40) respectively. Hjalmarsen and Brittany Mason both finished with a time of 21:45, placing Hjamarsen in 55th and Mason in 58th.
