October 05, 2007 | Cowboy Golf
Former Oklahoma State golf standout Trip Kuehne claimed his first-ever USGA title this week with his win at the 27th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
The former Cowboy All-American knocked off Dan Whitaker, 9 and 7, during Thursday's 36-hole final to wrap up the title. The Irving, Texas resident took command of the match after the morning round, building a 6-up lead through 18 holes and did not make a bogey over the course of the match's 29 holes on his way to victory.
A three-time member of the U.S. Walker Cup squad, including this past year, Kuehne advanced to the match play portion of the event after finishing in a tie for medalist honors during stroke play. After posting rounds of 70 and 74, he was among the six players to card a 1-over 144 total.
In the first round of match play, Kuehne posted a 1-up win over Ken Kellaney before defeating Michael Cooper, 2 and 1, in his second match to move into the round of 16.
After earning a 3-and-2 victory over James Lehman, Kuehne outlasted Stephen Sear in 20 holes in the quarterfinals and Scott Hardy in 19 holes during their semifinal match to set up his showdown with Whitaker in the championship.
Kuehne's victory was the fifth USGA championship in his family as his sister, Kelli, won the 1994 U.S. Girls' Junior and the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1995 and 1996. His brother, Hank, won the 1998 U.S. Amateur
