Rickie Fowler Named SGA National Amateur of the Month

Oklahoma State freshman Rickie Fowler has been named the Southern Golf Association's National Amateur of the Month for September it was announced today.
Fowler began the month competing in the Walker Cup as the youngest member of the U.S. squad. The Murrieta, Calif. native posted a 3-1 mark in the event to help the Americans defeat the team representing Great Britain and Ireland.
The Cowboy rookie then returned stateside where he made his collegiate debut at the Ping/Golfweek Preview with a fourth-place finish while helping OSU to a runner-up showing in the team race.
Fowler capped his run with a victory at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational while helping the Cowboys capture their first team title of the fall season as well. On his way to a 7-under 203 total, he carded a second-round 63 at Olympia Fields Country Club to match the course record held by Vijay Singh.
Fowler and the Cowboys will return to action on Oct. 21 when they take part in the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla.
The 5-year-old SGA award is selected from among amateur performances each month throughout the U.S. in all age groups by a panel of 15 golf officials, coaches and journalists.
The SGA supports amateur golf in a variety of ways, including the staging of the venerable Southern Amateur, which will be held at Lake Nona Club in Orlando next July.
