Homecoming In Stillwater As Kansas State Visits Oklahoma State
October 14, 2007 | Cowboy Football
The Final Home Stand
Oklahoma State begins its final home stand of the 2007 football season when the Cowboys host the Kansas State Wildcats in a Saturday night Homecoming battle. Kickoff is set for 6:05 p.m. with no live television planned for the game. OSU will be off the following week and then host Texas (Nov. 3) and Kansas (Nov. 10) to close the 2007 home schedule. Oklahoma State enters the K-State game with a share of the Big 12 South lead with five games remaining in the season.
The Cowboys Quickly
Oklahoma State is 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play following Saturday's historic victory in Lincoln against Nebraska. Kansas State will come to Stillwater with a 4-2 overall record and a 2-1 conference mark. OSU is coming off its first victory at Nebraska since 1960. A victory over Kansas State would give the Cowboys their third Big 12 win this season year, matching last season's total.
Two Of Three
Oklahoma State is 2-1 in Big 12 play for just the third time ever. It is the second best Big 12 start for the Cowboys behind only the 3-0 getaway in 1997. The previous two seasons in which OSU started conference play 2-1 resulted in eventual bowl appearances for OSU, as the Cowboys played in the Cotton Bowl in 2003 and the Alamo Bowl in 2004.
Scouting Kansas State
The Wildcats are coming off a 47-20 home win over Colorado. Kansas State is fourth in the Big 12 and No. 31 nationally in total defense, allowing 325 yards per game. The Wildcats are No. 11 nationally and second in the Big 12 in quarterbacks sacks with 3.2 per game and the ÂCats are fourth nationally in sacks allowed at just .67 per game. K-State receiver Jordy Nelson is third nationally with 9.3 catches per game and fourth in the country with 121.2 receiving yards per game. The Wildcats' losses have come at Auburn (23-13) and at home to Kansas (30-24).
Head To Head
The Oklahoma State-Kansas State matchup provides some interesting head-to-head meetings. The receiver matchup of Jordy Nelson against Adarius Bowman (6.3 catches and 103 receiving yards per game) is a headliner. While the Kansas State defense is No. 11 nationally in sacks at 3.2, the Oklahoma State offensive line is No. 10 in America, allowing just one sack per game.
From South To North
After opening the Big 12 season with two straight South Division opponents, Kansas State represents the second straight foe from the North Division of the conference. OSU is 8-5 against the Big 12 North since the beginning of the 2003 season with victories over every member of that division. Over the last two seasons, OSU has won three in a row against the North since the 2006 loss at Kansas State. Another Big 12 North team, Kansas, will visit Stillwater on Nov. 10.
99 Years Later
Oklahoma State and Kansas State first met on the football field back in 1908. It is the second oldest series for OSU against a Big 12 opponent. Only the Oklahoma State-Oklahoma series, which began in 1904 (three years before statehood), pre-dates the first meeting between the Cowboys and Wildcats. In that first-ever meeting between OSU and K-State, Ed Gallagher (future legendary Cowboy wrestling coach and the Gallagher of Gallagher-Iba Arena) set an OSU record that still stands with a 99-yard run from scrimmage. Incidentally, the fourth longest run from scrimmage in OSU history also came against Kansas State. David Thompson had a 91-yard jaunt for the Cowboys in 1995. And against K-State in 1981, Greg Hill set an OSU record with a 97-yard fumble return.
The Results
OSU leads the all-time series with Kansas State, 33-22. OSU holds a 17-8 series advantage in Stillwater. Kansas State's longest winning streak in the series, nine games, was snapped on the Wildcats' last visit to Stillwater. In that game, (Oct. 11, 2003) OSU was a 38-34 winner over No. 22 Kansas State.
