Cowboy Baseball Has Strong Fall Semester In Classroom
January 05, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
With the finalization of the grades of the 39 players on the Cowboys' roster, OSU's overall team grade point average was 3.15, a school record for baseball.
Of those 39 players on OSU's roster, 23 earned a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher, which is also a record for the fall. And for the second-straight semester, the Cowboys had 10 players named to the President's or Dean's honor rolls (one shy of the team record set last fall).
“We really try to recruit guys who are strong students as well as good ballplayers, and you can see that we've succeeded by what these guys have been able to accomplish in the classroom,” said OSU head coach Frank Anderson. “We really stress academics in our program, and it's good to see not only our current but our former athletes working hard and taking advantage of their opportunities.”
Named to the President's Honor Roll (4.0 G.P.A.) were senior Ryan Flavell, an education major, and freshmen Tyler Lyons and Eric Walker, who are both undeclared.
Seven Cowboys qualified for the Dean's Honor Roll by earning a G.P.A. between 3.50 and 3.99. Those players were senior Brandon Adams (sociology), freshman Kevin David (undeclared), freshman Dusty Harvard (undeclared), sophomore Kendall Horner (English), sophomore Joe Kent (biochemistry), sophomore Ryan Pittman (political science) and senior Keanon Simon (physical education).
OSU also had several former players return to school in the fall and graduate in December. Both Justin Colbert and Thomas Cowley earned bachelor's degrees in education, while Mike Phinney earned a physical education degree.
