Cowboys Fall at Iowa State, 21-12

OSU suffered its first four-loss season since finishing the 1999-2000 season,
The Cowboys had a chance to win in four of the six matches they lost as eight of the 10 bouts were within a point entering the third period. The two teams split those eight matches, but the Cyclones got a fall at 197 and a decision at 157 to put distance between themselves and the Cowboys.
The Cyclones (8-3) won seven matches against the Cowboys (12-4) in the previous meeting at National Duals on Jan. 14. OSU needed to reverse a few decisions from the previous match up to reverse the 25-9 score.
OSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the dual with victories at 165 and 174. Johny Hendricks faced his seventh top 10 opponent in his last eight matches in third-ranked Travis Paulson. Hendricks won a one-point decision again when he had exactly one minute of riding time over Paulson and won 5-4.
Brandon Mason followed it up with a 3-1 decision over Grant Turner. Mason rode out the third period to secure the victory.
ISU had a fall and a major decision at 184 and 197. Jack Jensen looked solid against sixth-ranked Jake Varner after getting pinned the last time he saw him. Jensen scored a takedown to tie the match heading into the third period, but Varner got an escape and a takedown in the third period to win the decision.
Kurt Backes picked up the bonus points for the Cyclones at 197. In a flurry to start the third period, Backes hooked up a quick cradle and recorded a fall in
David Zabriskie made his decision over OSU's Jared Rosholt hold up, and the Cyclones switched a result at 125 when No. 10 Nick Fanthorpe defeated Tyler Shinn to make the dual 15-6.
Coleman Scott and Nathan Morgan both avenged earlier losses to Cyclone wrestlers. Scott looked solid as he scored two takedowns after falling behind early to defeat Nick Gallick. Morgan had the only takedown against Mitch Mueller, but he had to hold on late to win by a point.
The Cowboys had to pull a pair of upsets to have a chance to win the dual.
The Cyclones were in a good position with one match remaining leading by six. OSU's Newly McSpadden had to pin third-ranked Trent Paulson to force a tie. Paulson removed any doubt when he scored a takedown and got a quick count for four points. Paulson went on to win by a decision to make the final score 21-12.
