OSU Football Media Luncheon Quotes
September 04, 2006 | Cowboy Football
“It's a new week. We broke down tape on Sunday morning, worked all day, and now we are back to our weekly schedule. It's our normal routine, now. We are excited about the win last Saturday and we are looking forward to playing a very good Arkansas State team.”
On Saturday's game vs. Arkansas State
“We are very aware of what they accomplished last year. When they played here last year, we weren't as far along as we wanted to be. They played us much tougher than what we thought they would and the reason why is that they were a pretty good team. They play good defense and they can really run the football. They went on to win enough games to get to a bowl. We understand the challenges we have going over to Little Rock (Ark.). We understand it is a big event when Arkansas State travels to play in Little Rock. Our team is aware of that and we are preparing for it. We watched them beat a Division I opponent there last week. Their defense basically handled the game. We have a lot of respect for them. We have a lot of respect for their team speed and we think they do a great job of coaching. We have a big week of preparation to get ready to go and play in Little Rock.”
On his team's defense
“We have more team speed. We have guys that show up quicker and guys that can hit. We still had some missed tackles in space, which concerns me. We need to do a better job of that. We had a couple of busted coverages that we need to clean up before the next game. Other than that, we have young guys that get out there, run around and make plays.”
On his team's offense
“I feel like Bobby Reid controlled the offense. He had a couple of errant throws and a couple of good throws. He ran the ball better than he did last year because he was able to run for 11 yards on third-and-10 and run for five yards on third-and-four. Mike Hamilton played great. He made some plays in the open field. He made a couple of guys miss and took care of the football. (Adarius) Bowman is exactly what we thought he would be and (Brandon) Pettigrew is what we thought he would be.”
On being able to play backups in the win over Missouri State
“It's nice for the players. They work hard in the spring and they work hard in the summer. They work hard out there when it is 110 degrees. It's nice that they can get into the game and enjoy themselves. That is a reward for hard work and effort. It's nice to get some of the new guys in and let them get some work in.”
Sophomore quarterback Bobby Reid
On the victory against Missouri State
“I felt pretty good after the victory, even though we made some mistakes. The coaches did a great job scouting Missouri State. It was also good to get the young guys out there so they could get their feet wet just in case any of the starters were to get hurt.”
On preparing for Arkansas State
“On film, Arkansas State looks a lot better than they did last year. They have guys who fly around and make tackles.”
On the play of Adarius Bowman and D'Juan Woods
“It's real helpful to have (Adarius) Bowman. In the beginning, D'Juan struggled a little, so I went to Bowman and he scored on his second reception. D'Juan responded later on and scored himself.”
Senior wide receiver D'Juan Woods
On the win against Missouri State
“We got a lot of things accomplished. Some of the plays we worked on in practice, we ran them to perfection in the game. There were guys who gave a lot of effort, such as down field blocking. Adarius (Bowman) turned a six-yard pass into a 20-yard touchdown. Things to that nature are types of things to look for in players and are things we practice doing.”
On how the addition of Adarius Bowman will play a factor on how opponents will cover in the secondary
“I think it will play a bigger part once we start playing conference opponents. I feel that guys come out in the first game not sure if their going to key on the guy who played last year, or if they are going to key on the other guy. Obviously, teams will come out with their base offenses and defenses and try to win football games.
Junior defensive end Nathan Peterson
On the play of the Oklahoma State defense
“We watched the film of the game this morning, and all around looking at the defense is like night and day different from the first game last season. The way everyone was flying around, the confidence level, being in the system for another year, everyone has a better grasp. Everyone is starting to become familiar with the defense. The basic defense we play now is not as hard as it used to be.”
On the play of freshman Perrish Cox
“It's nice to see a freshman not have to take a few games to adjust to the speed in college, as it's a lot different than the high school level. I could tell (Cox) was the real deal in practice, but it was impressive seeing him in the first play of the ball game run a 96-yard touchdown.”
Sophomore running back Mike Hamilton
On his goals during the season
“I am focused on being the work force by helping us get down the field. When I help the team get closer to the goal line it is just as good as scoring. This year, my goal is to score more touchdowns.”
On the play of the OSU offense
“I think our offense played well. We have things we need to work on as we made mistakes people don't see. This week at practice, we will correct the mistakes we made.”
Junior wide receiver Tommy Devereaux
On contributing to the special teams
“It felt great to have a few good returns. It's all about getting your mojo back and that is my biggest thing. Having my teammates and coaches believing in me feels good, but getting the ball back in my hands and showing people I can do something with it feels even better.”
On the play of Perrish Cox
“(Cox) is blessed. He was an All-American in high school, he has wheels, hands and moves. He reminds me of Reggie Bush.”
Senior defensive tackle Ryan McBean
On staying fresh throughout the game with the effect of the new play clock rule
“Every single snap, we are able to run to the ball full speed. Our guys are more in shape than they were last year at this point. We have prepared and devoted ourselves for this season, but regardless of how many plays we get, we will go full speed.”
On the play of the defense
“I felt we went 100 percent, but we should go 110. We went all out, but we know we can give more than what we gave against Missouri State. I give us a B on our overall play, but we need to work harder.
