Cowgirls Battle Michigan to 1-1 Draw
September 03, 2006 | Cowgirl Soccer
The two teams went scoreless for the first 80 minutes as there was plenty action on both sides of the field. Michigan took better care of the ball, but the Cowgirls made more of their opportunities out shooting the Wolverines 19-14 for the game.
OSU had 10 shots on goal, but UM keeper Megan Tuura came up big recording nine saves. Jesyca Rosholt finally snuck one past her in the 80th minute off a pass from Siera Strawser. It was the first goal Michigan had allowed all season.
Strawser, a freshman from Bixby, Okla., has registered a point in all four games OSU has played this season. She currently leads the team with nine points on two goals and five assists.
Oklahoma State appeared to be on its way to victory, but Michigan struck back with just over a minute left to play. After Judy Coffman played a long ball forward past the OSU defense, Melissa Dobbyn tracked it down and beat OSU keeper Jeanne Rankin to force overtime.
“We are a little disappointed because we gave up the goal so late,” co-head coach Colin Carmichael said. “We will work on that and hopefully the girls will do a little better job of killing the game off. You can't fault the effort and you can't fault the game, I thought both teams played really well.”
“I am always disappointed when we do not win at home,” co-head coach Karen Hancock said. “Michigan is a good team. We really have nothing to hang our heads over. We played pretty well. I am proud of our girls' effort and I am proud of our resolve in overtime. I felt like we had the better overtime, it was just unfortunate in the last minute that we could not put it away.”
Overtime went back and forth as both teams were looking for the game winner. OSU got off the only shot in the first overtime period, but both teams had four shots in the final 10 minutes.
The Cowgirls had the best scoring opportunity with just over a minute left in the game. Yolanda Odenyo played a pass into the box that deflected off Tuura's hands. Katie Lacey's shot attempt was turned away by Tuura. Michigan eventually cleared the ball off its goal line to keep the game tied at one.
OSU extended its unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents to 42 games with a win and a tie this weekend. OSU is 38-0-4 during that stretch, which covers the past four seasons.
The Cowgirls will put the streak to the test next weekend when they head west to battle Cal Poly and Loyola Marymount in the Loyola Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif.
