Cowboy Golf Finishes Fifth at Fighting Illini Invitational

The Cowboys entered the day in second place and just one shot out of the lead, but their 20-over team score dropped them into fifth place with an 876, 36-over total. Duke posted a 286 on Monday to claim the tournament title with a 24-over-par score of 864.
Stanford, which entered the final round as the 36-hole leader, posted a 295 to come in six shots behind the Blue Devils and alone in second place.
Individually, junior Pablo Martin began the day tied for second before carding a 2-over 72 to finish tied with three other players for third place with a 3-over total of 213. The Malaga, Spain native finished two shots off the pace of medalist Niklas Lemke of Arizona State, who fired a 4-under 66 to move from a tie for 13th place to the top of the leaderboard.
For Martin, the third-place showing marked the 20th top-10 finish in 28 career starts and marked the 14th time he has finished among the top five.
Senior Tyler Leon slipped from a tie for seventh place into a tie for 13th at 219 after posting a 76 during his final round, while sophomore Jonathan Moore dropped three spots into a tie for 24th place at 222 after a round of 75.
Senior Ryan Posey's 77 on Monday moved him from a tie for 25th place into a tie for 33rd at 225.
Freshman Chris Ward wrapped up his collegiate debut with a 77 as well to come in tied for 36th place at 226.
The Cowboys will return to action on Oct. 2 when they travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take part in the Ping/Golfweek Preview at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.
