Odenyo Lifts Cowgirls to Victory Over Jayhawks, 1-0
September 23, 2006 | Cowgirl Soccer
A ball was played forward that deflected off of a Kansas defender. KU keeper Julie Hanley came off her line, but Odenyo beat her to it and scored on an empty net in the second sudden victory period.
“The ball just popped up in front of me and I saw the goalie come out,” Odenyo said. “I said this is the fastest I am going to run today and I just went for it. When I passed the goalie there was no doubt it was going in.”
The goal gave the Oklahoma State soccer program its 100th victory as OSU improved to 7-1-1 on the season and remained unbeaten in the Big 12 at 2-0-0. Kansas fell to 5-3 on the year and is 0-1 in conference action.
“It is nice to keep amassing victories at Oklahoma State,” co-head coach Karen Hancock said. “We would like to get a lot more. Maybe I will be around to see 200 or 300. The more important thing was this was a win against a conference opponent. We are off to a great start in conference. We just beat a very good team, and I am proud of the effort by our team.”
The game was pretty even through regulation as Kansas had the better chances in the first half, while Oklahoma State had the better of it in the second half. The Jayhawks out shot the Cowgirls 9-4 during the first period. That number reversed in the second half as OSU out shot KU 14-4 in the second half.
The first overtime period went the way of the Jayhawks. KU took five shots to zero for OSU. The Cowgirls had the dominating play in the second overtime as OSU took three shots before Odenyo ended the game 5:04 into the final period.
The Cowgirls out shot the Jayhawks 21-18 for the game, and had five corner kicks to three for KU. OSU had opportunities to score off of the corner kicks, but nobody could ever put the finishing touch on the ball before KU cleared it out.
Of the 39 shots, only seven of them were on goal, with each keeper recording three saves. Erin Stigler made her first career start in goal for OSU and recorded the shutout.
The Cowgirls play 11th-ranked Colorado on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the OSU Soccer Complex.
