Cowboy Golf Set To Open Season At Fighting Illini Invitational
September 23, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
The 54-hole tournament will consist of 36 holes on Sunday and will be followed by Monday's final round at the par-70, 7,205-yard layout. The 12-team field will begin play each day at 7:30 a.m. (CST).
The defending NCAA champions, OSU will begin the 2006-07 season as the country's top-ranked team. The Cowboys also enter the year with the nation's top two individuals in Pablo Martin and Jonathan Moore, who enter the season ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively.
OSU will bring a three-tournament winning streak into the event after closing out last season with wins at The Maxwell, NCAA Central Regional and the NCAA Championship.
Both Martin and Moore enter the tournament with streaks of their own. Martin, the 2006 national player of the year, has won the first tournament of the season in each of his first two years, posting back-to-back victories at the Ping/Golfweek Preview. The national freshman of the year last season, Moore comes into the event having won his last three collegiate starts after earning medalist honors at The Maxwell, NCAA Central Regional and the NCAA Championship to close out last season.
Joining Martin and Moore in the lineup will be seniors Ryan Posey and Tyler Leon, while freshman Chris Ward will round out the starting five.
For Posey, the start will be the 17th of his career, while Leon is coming off a junior season that saw him earn honorable mention All-America honors after helping the Cowboys to their 10th national title.
A native of McKinney, Texas, Ward will make his collegiate debut after a prep career that saw him earn honorable mention All-America honors on two occasions.
