Cowgirls Shutout Michigan State, 2-0
September 02, 2006 | Cowgirl Soccer
OSU improved to 3-0-0 with the victory, while MSU dropped to 1-1-2. It was the first win over a Big Ten program in the history of Oklahoma State.
The Cowgirls completely controlled play in the first 45 minutes, taking Michigan State out of its gameplan. OSU out shot the Spartans 14-5 in the first half, and had five corner kicks to none for MSU.
“Michigan State is a quality team,” co-head coach Colin Carmichael said. “I thought our kids did a good job of controlling the ball in the first half. In the second half we played more conservative. We did a good job of limiting their chances.”
Just over 25 minutes into the game, Strawser took a shot that was blocked, but it went right to Rosholt who beat the keeper. It was Rosholt's second game winning goal of the season.
Two minutes later, Niccole Grimaldi sent in a high floating ball that cleared everybody and settled at the feet of Strawser. Strawser beat the keeper to give the Cowgirls a two goal advantage.
OSU had two other chances in the first half, but Spartan keeper Nicole Galas made diving saves on shots by Adriane Radtke and Rosholt.
Michigan State's best opportunity came late in the first half when Erin Doan sent in a free kick that rebounded off of OSU keeper Jeanne Rankin. The ball bounced around near the goal before Katie Lacey cleared it out on the goal line.
OSU again controlled possession in the second half, but only had three shots to show for it. However, the Cowgirls accomplished their goal limiting the touches of Michigan State who had only two shots in the half.
“I thought we played tremendous all the way around,” co-head coach Karen Hancock said. “ Siera Strawser, Sasa Jackson and Yolanda Odenyo all had terrific games. I thought Ashlyn Brantley was tremendous both on the attack and defensively. I thought our back line was extremely good. Katie Lacey had the one goal line save. The only time I thought they really threatened our goal and Katie came up huge on that play. Adriane Radtke played well, the list is long.
Rankin recorded four saves and earned her first shutout of the season.
The Cowgirls will play Michigan on Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex. Admission is free to all fans who present their ticket stub from tonight's game.
