September 13, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
Entering his third year as an assistant for the OSU golf programs, Bratton posted rounds of 71 and 72 during stroke play. His even-par 143 total was good for a 10th-place tie and moved him into the 64-player match play tree.
In his first round match, Bratton cruised to a 7 and 5 victory over Jonathan Jame of Glen Head, N.Y. Bratton made the turn with a 3-up advantage before claiming the first four holes on the back nine to close out the match and move into the Round of 32.
Bratton and second-round foe John McClure halved the first five holes of their match before Bratton claimed the sixth hole with a birdie. He pushed his lead to 3 up with a par on No. 15 before closing out the match by halving the par-4 16th hole.
In his third-round meeting with Michael McCoy, Bratton clung to a 1-up advantage before back-to-back birdies on Nos. 9 and 10 gave him a three-hole cushion. He won the par-5 15th hole with a par to seal his 4 and 3 victory and send him into a meeting with Scott Hardy tomorrow morning.
Former Cowboy Trip Kuehne shared medalist honors at the event with Ryan Hybl and Carlton Forrester after posting rounds of 68 and 71 to finish with a 4-under 138 total. In his first round match, the Dallas, Texas native knocked off James Lehman by a 4 and 3 count. However, Kuehne was eliminated in the second round after falling to Fairfield, Calif. native Jeff Wilson, 3 and 2.
Started in 1981, the U.S. Mid-Amateur is for amateur golfers of at least 25 years of age and was started to provide a formal national championship for post-college players. It is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly amateur events.
