Pablo Martin Falls In Western Amateur Final
August 07, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
Martin advanced to the title match with a 5 and 3 victory over Scott Pieri on Sunday Morning. For Pieri, Martin was the third consecutive OSU player he faced en route to the semifinal round after defeating Jonathan Moore and Tyler Leon.
Martin took the lead on the second hole and built the advantage to 5 up through 12 holes before closing out the match with an eagle on the 15th hole.
In the championship match, the Malaga, Spain native and LaCassie made the turn all square before LaCassie won Nos. 10, 13 and 14 to take a 3-up lead. Martin fought back with a conceded eagle putt at the 15th and a conceded birdie put on No. 16 trim the deficit to 1-down.
LaCassie, a University of Minnesota product, answered with a birdie at the par-3 17th to secure a 2 and 1 win and become the first Australian champion in the tournament's 104-year history.
A junior-to-be for the Cowboys, Martin will return to action this weekend when he travels in the European Tour's KLM Open.
