Odenyo Leads Cowgirls Past Missouri State, 2-1
August 27, 2006 | Cowgirl Soccer
The Cowgirls out played Missouri State in the first half, but had nothing to show for it. OSU took 10 shots compared to the Bears none in the opening period. OSU also received seven corner kicks in the first half, but could not create a scoring opportunity off of them. Jesyca Rosholt had the best opportunity, knocking a shot from the top of the penalty area that MSU keeper Jackie Jasper deflected off the cross bar.
“I was pleased with everything in the first half other than the fact that we did not score,” co-head coach Karen Hancock said. “We needed to do a little bit better job of finishing some chances. We really dominated play in the first half and I felt real good about what we were doing.”
The Cowgirls came out strong in the second half, but the Bears took advantage of a Cowgirl mistake to take an early lead. The OSU defense played a ball back to keeper Jeanne Rankin who lost control and Chelsea Anderson took it away and scored on an empty net.
The lead did not last long however as OSU was granted a free kick just outside the penalty area. Odenyo took it and bended the ball around the Missouri State wall and into the corner of the net to tie the game at one.
Just four minutes later, the Cowgirls had a corner kick. Siera Strawser delivered a high ball into the middle of the box that Odenyo got a head on and put it away to give OSU the lead it would not relinquish in the 66th minute.
With 17:43 remaining in the contest, a thunderstorm moved through delaying the game for 50 minutes. The teams eventually resumed play, and the Bears applied pressure but could not create much of a scoring opportunity.
Jeanne Rankin went the distance in goal for the Cowgirls to earn her second win of the season.
“We are happy to get the win,” co-head coach Colin Carmichael said. “Anytime you can come back and get a win you are happy. I thought we played okay, we just did not finish our chances.”
Oklahoma State will host Big Ten schools Michigan State and Michigan next weekend. The Cowgirls play Michigan State on Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by a game with Michigan on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
