Cowboy Duo Eliminated At U.S. Amateur Championship
August 26, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
A finalist at the 1994 U.S. Amateur, Kuehne saw his bid to join his brother, Hank, who won in 1998, and his sister, Kelli, the 1995 and 1996 women's winner, as a U.S. Amateur Champion after falling in the quarterfinals. Martin was knocked off during the third round.
During the third round, Kuehne won the first hole of his match against Matthew Swan and took the lead for good on the fifth hole. The Dallas, Texas native made the turn with a 1-up advantage and began to pull away on No. 11 as he won the next four holes to put Swan away and move into the quarterfinals.
In the round of eight, Kuehne found himself with a three-hole deficit after six holes to John Kelly, but began to climb back in the match by winning Nos. 7 and 9. However, he could get closer as Kelly won No. 12 and put the match away by claiming the 16th hole.
Martin's comeback bid came up just short as he fell to Rickie Fowler during the round of 16. Martin held a 1-up lead through six holes, but Fowler won three consecutive holes to close out the front nine. He built his lead to three before Martin won Nos. 15 and 16, but the Malaga, Spain native could get no closer as the duo halved the final three holes of the match.
