Kuehne, Martin Move Into Third Round At U.S. Amateur
August 25, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
Kuehne, a member of OSU's 1995 national championship squad, defeated Casey Watabu 2 and 1 to move on. Kuehne birdied No. 2 to take a brief lead and trailed only once after a bogey at the par-4 sixth hole. After falling behind, the 1994 U.S. Amateur finalist rallied to win the next three holes and closed out the match against Watabu, who won the U.S. Amateur Public Links earlier this summer, after halving the 17th hole.
The former Cowboy will take on Matthew Swan tomorrow morning. Swan defeated OSU senior Ryan Posey during the second round to advance.
After grabbing the lead on the first hole against Swan, Posey lost the next two holes, but remained stayed within one for much of the match. Swan won Nos. 13 and 14 and parred out to secure a 2 and 1 victory.
Martin, who will be a junior for OSU this season, found himself 3-down after five holes, but cut the deficit by two at the turn. The Malaga, Spain squared the match with a birdie on the 12th hole and took his first lead of the day with a par on the 15th hole. A birdie at the 16th pushed the margin to 2-up before Martin halved the 18th to advance.
The victory by Martin set up a third-round matchup against Rickie Fowler of Murrieta, Calif.
Sophomore Jonathan Moore was eliminated by Kyle Davis, falling by a 2 and 1 count. The defending NCAA champion never led in his match against the Central Florida product as Davis claimed the fourth hole and never surrendered his lead. Davis built the advantage to 3-up with five to play before Moore won back-to-back holes, but was able to end the match with pars on Nos. 16 and 17.
The field had to endure a delay of four hours and 24 minutes on Thursday due to inclement weather, forcing the third round to be moved to Friday morning and the quarterfinals to begin Friday afternoon.
