Cowboy Golfers Advance To Second Round At U.S. Amateur
August 24, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
Former Cowboy Trip Kuehne as well as current team members Ryan Posey, Jonathan Moore and Pablo Martin all moved into tomorrow's round of 32 at the par-72, 7,473-yard layout.
Kuehne built a 5-up lead through 13 holes and cruised to a 5 and 3 victory over Chris Rogers. The Dallas, Texas native held a two-hole advantage heading to the 11th tee and won three consecutive holes to widen the margin. After losing the 14th hole, Kuehne closed out the match with a birdie on the par-5 15th hole.
Kuehne will face Casey Watabu of Kapaa, Hawaii tomorrow morning with the winner advancing to the afternoon's third round.
Senior Ryan Posey halved each of the first 10 holes in his match against Ben Fox before taking his first lead with a par on the 11th hole. The Dallas, Texas won the next two holes and held a 3-up lead with four to play, but dropped Nos. 15, 16 and 17. The two players halved the 18th to force extra holes before Posey prevailed with a par on the 21st hole.
Posey will take on Matthew Swan of Montgomery, Ala., tomorrow morning.
Sophomore Jonathan Moore raced out to a big lead against Skip Berkmeyer, winning six of the first eight holes on his way to a 6 and 5 victory. Moore blistered the front nine with birdies on four of his first seven holes and was never threatened as Berkmeyer won only one of the match's 13 holes.
Moore will square off with Kyle Davis of Kennett Square, Pa., tomorrow.
Junior Pablo Martin endured a see-saw battle with Tyrone Mordt as the duo each won three of the first six holes before Martin grabbed his first lead with a birdie on the seventh hole. After halving the next five holes, Martin extended his lead to 3-up by winning the 13th and 14th holes. However, Mordt took advantage of three consecutive bogeys by the Cowboy standout to square the match heading to the 18th hole. Both players parred their first two extra holes before Martin advanced with a par on the 21st hole.
Martin will meet Kensington, Md., native Greg Carlin during his second round.
