August 21, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
Verplank was one of two captain's picks added to the 12-man roster, joining Stewart Cink as the final two members named to the team. The selection marks the second Ryder Cup appointment for Verplank, who was a member of the 2002 squad. The four-time PGA Tour winner also competed for the American team at the 2005 Presidents Cup.
At the 2002 event, Verplank posted a 2-1-0 record. He finished with a 2-2-1 mark for the Presidents Cup squad last year.
A four-time All-American and the 1986 NCAA champion while at OSU, Verplank is currently ranked No. 34 in the world. He was runner-up in his first two outings of the season, tying for second at both the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the FBR Open. He has two other top 10s to his credit this year, tying for 10th at the Bay Hill Invitational and tying for fourth place two weeks ago at the Buick Open.
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Chad Campbell, David Toms, Chris DiMarco, Vaughn Taylor, J.J. Henry, Zach Johnson and Brett Wetterich will also compete for the American side.
The Ryder Cup will take place Sept. 22-24 at The K Club in Dublin, Ireland. The Americans will be looking for their first victory since 1999.
