Cowboys Scrimmage in Preparation for 2006 Kickoff
August 21, 2006 | Cowboy Football
The Oklahoma State football team scrimmaged for approximately two hours Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium as the team prepares for the September 2 opener against Missouri State.
Head coach Mike Gundy said the secondary continues to play well.
“The same players are playing well,” said Gundy. “Defensively, Jacob Lacey and Martel Van Zant played well and Perrish Cox continues to play well. (Andre) Sexton and (Donovan) Woods show up on defense.”
On the offensive side of the ball, Gundy stated the talented receiving duo of Adarius Bowman and D'Juan Woods continued their strong play in the scrimmage.
“Offensively, Bowman and Woods make plays.” said Gundy. “Bobby Reid played okay. I don't think he turned the ball over.”
One thing that concerns Gundy is the depth of the team after the starters.
“We do not have a lot of depth,” said Gundy. “When our ones are out there we are a good football team. If we get a few injuries it could make a difference in our season right now. We need to continue to work some of the young guys in practice in case we have some injuries.”
Recent injuries at the wide receiver position has given several young players the opportunity to step up and earn more playing time.
“There are some young guys who are making some strides. Artell Woods is doing a nice job for us as a freshman,” said Gundy. “We have been getting some plays out of Seth Newton. Seth is a veteran guy for us even though he is still young. We are giving some guys an opportunity to step in there.”
Going into the 2006 campaign, the Cowboy coaching staff does not have to worry about a quarterback controversy as sophomore Bobby Reid has continued to show improvement.
“He gets a little better every practice. Bobby (Reid) still has a lot of work to do but he is better player now than he was a year ago,” said Gundy. “I am comfortable with him.”
