Cowgirls Down No. 24 Mississippi, 1-0
August 20, 2006 | Cowgirl Soccer
“We went on the road to a very good team's home field and beat them,” co-head coach Karen Hancock said. “We are not going to get too excited because it was just an exhibition game and it does not mean a lot unless we can back it up with wins down the road.”
Angelika Feldbacher brought the ball down the sideline and played it to the middle of the field. Ashlyn Brantley collected the ball and fed Odenyo for the goal. It was part of a dominating first half for the Cowgirls as they out shot Ole Miss 7-2 in the first 45 minutes.
The Cowgirls had to endure a Rebel attack for much of the second half, but the OSU defense was up to the challenge. OSU still out shot the Rebels in the second half, 6-5.
“We pretty much dominated the first half,” Hancock said. “Mississippi raised its level of play in the second half and made a big push at the end. Erin Stigler made a huge save at the end, and we were good enough to hold on for the victory.”
Odenyo continued to attack the Ole Miss goal as she took six shots in the contest. Jesyca Rosholt took four shots at the net, but the early goal proved to be all the Cowgirls would need.
Jeanne Rankin started in goal for the Cowgirls and played the first 75 minutes. Rankin made three saves before Stigler came on to preserve the shutout.
Oklahoma State will open the regular season on Friday night at Texas State. Kickoff has been pushed back 30 minutes from its originally scheduled 7 p.m. start time in San Marcos, Texas.
