Cowboys Get In Final Preparation Before Saturday's Scrimmage
August 19, 2006 | Cowboy Football
The Oklahoma State football team hit the practice field in half pads (helmets and shoulde pads) Friday evening in preparation for Saturday's closed scrimmage in Stillwater.
The wide receiver corps has lost some depth since camp opened and head coach Mike Gundy said the staff is looking for some of the younger players to step up.
“It was too easy going the other way,” said Gundy on the once deep receiver position. “We are working some young guys in. We are just trying to find out who can help us out early in the year.”
The Cowboys are scheduled to scrimmage on Saturday and Gundy stated turnovers, on both sides of the ball, are the main thing he is keeping he eyes on.
“Execution is kind of a gray area,” said Gundy. “I want to see strips and turnovers but then I want to see us hold onto the ball. I want to see guys play good football.”
Gundy said he has seen improvement from last season in the turnover department.
“We are better in that area,” said Gundy. “We are a much better team execution wise. We might have a couple a day (turnovers), where in the past we might have had eight or ten a day. We are better at it and now we have to go out there and play the game.”
One thing Gundy has not focused on is preseason prognostications.
“I do not really pay attention to that. I think you get what you deserve,” said Gundy. “We did not play well last year. I certainly would not expect them to have any respect for us.”
