Gent arrived on campus regarded as one of the top prospects in talent-rich Texas. He had 164 total tackles during an impressive senior season at Irving's MacArthur High School. Fifteen of those tackles were behind the line of scrimmage, and he also had four forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. He also added four blocked kicks and three interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Gent was named first-team all-area by the Dallas Morning News and was the District 6-5A Defensive Most Valuable Player. He was first-team all-district as both a junior and senior and was a Dallas Morning News Top 100 player.
