Oklahoma State Football Post-Scrimmage Quotes
August 14, 2006 | Cowboy Football
Head Coach Mike Gundy
On the scrimmage
“I thought we had a good scrimmage. I think we stayed fairly healthy. It is always good to have a 100-play scrimmage and stay healthy. There are some young guys who showed up and made some plays. We are going to have to have some young guys show up and compete for us this year. There were also some veteran guys who played better than they did in the spring.”
On the play of Bobby Reid
“It seemed like he played pretty well. When Bobby (Reid) plays within our system and controls the ball, he has played well. I thought he played pretty well without watching the tape.”
On the offense
“The most important thing is we held on to the football, for the most part. When you do that you give yourself a chance to win the game. We hit a couple of big plays and ran effectively.”
On the running backs
“(Dantrell) Savage gives you more elusiveness in your scheme. We know what Mike (Hamilton) and Julius (Crosslin) can do. When he goes in there, he is going to make more people miss. That is what we were looking for when we brought him in here. (Toston) has done a nice job. Calvin Roberts has actually done a nice job for us. Other than putting the ball on the ground today, he has run better than he has in a couple of years.”
On receiver depth
“We need some of those guys to make plays. Ricky (Price) is a sophomore who played as a true freshman and kind of found his way into college football. At the end of the season he made some plays for us. He will be an experienced player that makes us feel a little bit better. Tommy Devereaux has been hit-and-miss throughout his career, but the one thing he does is run fast. When he gets behind somebody and you put it out there for him he is going to go get it. It was nice to see him make a play.”
Redshirt freshman safety Andre Sexton
On the play of the defense
“We came out strong as a defense at first and were flying around, but then the quick pace of the offense kind of caught us off guard and got us tired. We've got to fight through that.”
On his performance
“I got a couple of big hits at first, but as I got tired I missed a couple of tackles so I need to work on my conditioning a little bit more.”
On the defense's improvement since the spring
“I feel a lot more comfortable than in the spring because we've been around more. We're moving around and showing a lot of different blitzes, different angles and confusing the offense.”
On the crowd
“There was a nice crowd out there. We really like the support from the Stillwater fans.”
On his return since having to redshirt last season with an injury
“It's a great feeling to be back out there because playing football is everything I love to do. Sitting out a whole season hurt a lot. To be out there moving around again feels good.”
Sophomore linebacker Marcus Brown
On the performance of the defense
“The defense played hard, but we made some mistakes. It's only the first scrimmage, and we've got to get better every practice before the first game.”
On the defensive improvement since the spring
“We're greatly improved at every position since the spring camp. We've got to continue to make progress.”
On the Cowboys' inexperienced group of linebackers
“We are young. We don't have any seniors at all. We're all working hard to prove ourselves and get better. There's a lot of talent out there, and guys are fighting hard to make plays.”
Sophomore quarterback Bobby Reid
On the performance of sophomore receiver Ricky Price
“With Adarius (Bowman) not playing today, it was time for the little guys to step it up. Sometime, one of the older guys might go down and I am going to need one of the younger guys to step it up. Today, Ricky did that.”
On the defense
“We tried to trick them a few times today, but those guys just stuck in there. We hit them a few times, but they came through. Sometimes, it seemed like they were on the blocks, but that is just how good those guys are. They did a good job today.”
