Before coming to OSU, Young spent four years at Hutchinson Community College, where he served as the defensive coordinator for one season. Before taking over the defense, he worked as a linebacker coach, special teams coordinator and a strength and conditioning coordinator. He coached JUCO All-Americans David Dixon and John Racette during his time at Hutchinson Community College. He also was an assistant coach on the track and field team at HCC.
Prior to his time at Hutchinson Community College, Young coached two years at Emporia State University, where he served as the defensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and strength and conditioning coordinator.
Young began his coaching career at the University of Texas-El Paso, where he served as a student assistant for one season. He received a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from UTEP in 1999.
While working on his master's degree in exercise science at Fort Hays State University, Young also served as a graduate assistant for the football team. He worked as a defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at FHSU and received his master's degree in 2002.
Young played football at Butler Community College, where he was a team captain, before completing his collegiate career at UTEP. He was nominated for the Blue Gray All-Star Game in 1997 following his senior season with the Miners.
Young is married to the former Gabriela Tonon.
