Jonathan Moore Picks Up Victory at Players Amateur
July 16, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
The sophomore-to-be finished with a 22-under total of 262 after posting a 67 during his final round to outlast Robert Riesen, who fired a final round 65 to finish with a 263 score.
The victory extended a remarkable run for Moore that began with three consecutive victories to close out the collegiate season. The Vancouver, Wash. native began the string by shattering the tournament scoring mark at The Maxwell before winning the NCAA Central Regional. After becoming the eighth Cowboy to take medalist honors at the NCAA Championship, Moore qualified for the U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club last month.
In addition, he tied for ninth place at the Northeast Amateur in late June and has moved to No. 2 in the Golfweek/Titleist Men's Amateur Rankings.
After opening with a 67 on Thursday, Moore tied the low score of the tournament with a 9-under 62 during his second round before posting a 66 on Saturday to enter the final round with a three-shot advantage.
With the victory he joins an impressive list of champions in the short history of the event, adding his name to the likes of Ben Curtis, Bill Haas and Camilo Villegas. The win also earned Moore an invitation for the PGA Tour's Verizon Heritage on April 9-15 at the Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Former Cowboy Trip Kuehne tallied a 268 total to tie for sixth place overall and tied for first in the mid-amateur division, while senior-to-be Tyler Leon tied for 20th at 9-under 275. Sophomore-to-be Trent Leon tied for 33rd place with a 279 score to round out the group of OSU participants.
